CONGRATULATIONS we successfully received a $700 grant from the Jane Goodall Institute, Roots and Shoots program which will allow us to travel to Ye’yumnuts, a local archeological site (now left to allow the sacred space to continue as intended). We will examine the space with interpreters from Cowichan Tribes to help us better understand the space and indigenous plants/uses of the area.
We will explore evidence from 2 000 years ago (virtually on the web site). Mrs. Ward had the opportunity to hold several artifacts from the site brought by Dr. Brian Tom from the University of Victoria at the site recently. This lead to a class discussion about whether artifacts should be “removed or remain” on site. These artifacts are currently in the archives at the University of British Columbia.
The students then created a journal (non-fiction) writing using the OREO method where they state an opinion, gave a reason for their opinion followed by evidence to support their point to state one side of the debate. All of this work should help us reflect on the land which is underneath us. Does knowing this shift how you walk in and around the community?
“Ancient civilizations” teach us so much. Unless we reflect on the gift of teachings from our community how can we shift previous misconceptions? “[Perseverance] without [reflection] leads to the same result” quote adapted from the Book of Boba Fett.

BLACK HOLES
On December 14th, 2020 I spoke (by zoom) with Alice Young who is completing her Masters surrounding black holes. She received my questions. She zoomed in from Munich, Germany.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE SLIDES FROM ALICE’S ZOOM WITH US.
Alice taught us:
-A black hole is really the absence of light where light can’t escape.
-space and time make a fabric.
-singularity-is a place where math and physics don’t work the same. Numbers / amounts when divided by 0 the quantity goes to infinity.
-Alice is recording the schwarschild radius where measurements and research can be gathered and compared.
-Alice is looking at the ten second measure of distance. Angular distance.
-She spoke about our sun (star) and how as they get older they get “redder” as they emit longer light waves. She also stated that our sun (star) is a main sequence star, which means it is at the middle of it’s life. When our sun “dies” it will become a white dwarf. It is too small to become a black hole.
-She also explained the difference between Stellar black holes (which are smaller) and super massive black holes.
-Stellar black holes, while smaller, are the ones where objects going in take on the look of spaghetti but that if a human went in feet first the feet would be longer or more stretched than our head.
-Super black holes are two or more black holes that have sucked one another in. In these black holes objects compress down in size.
-If someone were to go in this black hole it would look like the person was frozen forever. It is harder to get out of the black hole than going back in time.
IN AND AROUND OUR COMMUNITY
Please take a look at the art work below. What mood does the artwork evoke?
School board logo developed in 2020 by Stuart Pagaduan.
The picture below is from Habitat for Humanity
This is from a project they were working on in downtown Duncan. Their first draft was rejected and they had to revise their plan. This is the updated plan. People who persevere...amazing.
Watch for the Habitat for Humanity writing contest for students coming soon.
Student passion projects
To support one of the projects we will build bird houses for seniors to help improve their mental health in our own communities. Please click on the picture above and watch the video (procedural approach) so you will have some background knowledge before the build.
