DEFINITION A utopia (/juːˈtoʊpiə/yoo-TOH-pee-ə) is an imaginary community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens.[1] The term was coined by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island society in the south Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South America. The opposite of a utopia is a dystopia, which dominates the fictional literature from the 1950s onwards, chiefly because of the impact of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). However, the term can also denote actual experiments in what participants regard as a vastly superior manner of living, generally in what are termed intentional communities. In common parlance it is synonymous with "impossible", "far-fetched", and "deluded". Literary utopias focus on, amongst other things, equality, in such categories as economics, government and justice, with the method and structure of proposed implementation varying based on ideology.[2]

Over the next few days I am planning to do some gardening around my house. I plan to do this because it is a good time of year (less frost), the weather has improved and is warmer which the plants do well in and I feel as though I have accomplished something at the end of the day. I usually start planting during Spring Break. When I begin planting, I normally keep the flowers inside. I was not able to do that this year as we got a new kitten. You may be wondering what a kitten has to do with flowers… a lot. I usually put the flowers in flower boxes on the windowsills. Recently, our kitten has taken to sleeping on the windowsills. He is also teething so he likes to eat anything that is near him. Based on what I saw I did not think it would be a good idea to have flowers around the house or on the windowsills. As a result, I did not get flowers until last weekend. Up until a few days ago it was still quite cool outside in the mornings. This is not good weather for new plants. The warmer weather is fantastic for my new plants. When I buy plants are usually keep them in their little containers for several days. This allows me to take them outside into the warm sun during the day and bring them back inside in the cooler evenings. I notice a huge difference between plants that stay inside and plants that are taken outside into the sunshine during the day. The growth and development of the plants that absorb the suns rays is much greater. The warmer weather is how I know when it is time to plant. When it is finally time to transplant what I have bought from their little containers into flower boxes, hanging baskets, or put in the soil in my garden I get very excited. I love taking the new plants, talking to them, and thanking them for sharing their beauty with me and my family. When I plant them I give them fresh water and some all natural fertilizer so that they get the nutrients they need. I think I will be gardening for the rest of my life. I love it! Gardening is an important part of my daily life. It allows me to teach my sons about the seasons, the importance of taking care of plant life, while appreciating nature.

Please include...
-job type -training required (University degree, trades degree, red seal) -location -co workers or not -pay -benefits (do you get dental, medical and or other coverage?) -expectations of the work environment (do you have set work times, lunch breaks, days off, or any flexibility with hours, dress code) -would you work for a "boss", on your own or with a group? -what are some of the "perks" of the job (free pop, free cafeteria, a lot of vacation time?)
CLICK THE PICTURE BELOW TO LEARN ABOUT THE EYESIGHT OF THE “PEACOCK SHRIMP”
Exemplar completed by Mrs. Ward 15 minutes using speech to text 10 minutes editing.
If I could do any job in the world I would want to be a game programmer. I would want to invent a new way to see during virtual gaming. I would use the framework from the “peacock shrimp” which can see in two different directions at all times. Even though it has more colour receptacles than we have it is the way that it sees in three dimensions that I am interested and at the speed it can do it. I had the idea when I was watching the BBC earth movie. Once I saw how the creature sees I began to rethink how we see as humans. I thought “There must be a way to improve our sight through technology and gaming”. I expect that I would need some training with coding and technology before I would be able to begin this area of study. I would need to do some research to see which courses I should take at the university level in order to be taken seriously with my invention. I would begin by researching universities close to the area so I could attend while still working. I would then ask professors what they think would be the best way to be trained for this career. While this training would cost money I would see it as an investment in my future. I have a feeling that this invention could be worth a lot of money. I think with this job that I could do it almost anywhere. I could zoom with coworkers and or my boss as well as participate in meetings as needed. If it didn’t matter where I needed to be I think that I would choose to be in the Caribbean. That way I could work outside rather than inside. I would love to feel the fresh breeze in my hair while working on advanced Technology. I like the idea of being able to work when I want to work at any hour of the day, wear what I want to wear, say what I want to say without worrying about following the rules of the workplace. I would get snacks when I needed them have lunch as needed and stop when I felt like it was time. I like the flexibility of working on my own terms. Even though I might be working as my own boss, I would expect a company or contractor to pay me enough to ensure I would have dental coverage, medical coverage, as well as other benefits covered. I would still expect vacation time but would do my best to live a vacation lifestyle every day.

Today I would like you to write a letter to either Michelle Staples (Mayor of Duncan) or Al Siebring (Mayor District of North Cowichan). In your letter I want you to state what you have noticed in and around the Quw'utsun valley over the past year. Feel free to ask them what advice they would give themselves and others after reflecting on events of this past year.
You may also want to be a bit more specific about things happening around the Quw’utsun valley. I wore a specific t-shirt yesterday. Do you know why? With parental support, you may research this.
SOME OTHER POSSIBLE QUESTIONS OR WONDERINGS
I wonder I have not seen any building of the new high school? It is 15 years over due...what is the time frame for completion?
I see the new RCMP building is under construction. Great! What about the new hospital?
It seems like the housing issues are being dealt with, I can see the construction. What are the projections for our homeless community have a roof over their heads?
What future plans do you have to help with keeping our communities safe, at your level, from COVID 19. We are doing our part (distancing, wearing masks, washing hands) what else can be done and has been done at your level?

Dear Mr. Siebring,
Over the past year I have noticed some things in and around the Quw’utsun valley. While I understand things are different during a pandemic, some things have remained amazing in this valley. Being able to get out into the green spaces has been such a life saver for everyone’s mental health. I do feel that we should have more outdoor play structures, parks and green spaces where people can be put appreciating nature while maintaining distance. Some things in our valley have changed. In the beginning of the pandemic people seemed a little kinder, more patient. I now see people becoming either tired or more vocal about things that may have been underlying in their lives. Recently, I have become aware of the treatment of members of our community. I have read your quote, on the Quw’utsun Tribes website and was pleased to see you standing up for our elders, parents and xe’ xe’ smun’eem. I am very disappointed with some of the businesses and people who have been personally going out of their way to practise inequity. What do you see as something we should be doing at the community level to support our people? What can we continue to do to keep people safe medically (distance ourselves, wash hands, wear masks) as well as how to support one another emotionally? I look forward to your response.
Sincerely, Jennifer Ward

Teacher exemplar (teacher example) Using speech to text on an iPad 10 minutes 5 minutes to edit
As we approach a new year I begin to reflect on things I’m grateful for and things that I may want to change. One thing I’m going to be focussing on in the next session or term is my fitness level. I do not expect to reach the goals that I had when I was 17. What I will do, is I will research what the expected fitness level of someone my age and height is first. I will then see my doctor and have a basic check up. During this check up I will be asking about what I would like to be doing to train and get in shape. I will follow the recommendations of the doctor. In that I want to be fit, I will also be looking at my eating habits. I will not be dieting but rather eating healthier foods. You’ve heard me talk about this before. I am excited to try new recipes and different flavors. I’m going to be looking at cooking with sauces that are healthy and use interesting taste like mango, lime, coconut. I am excited and looking forward to this next chapter. I am grateful for the students I work with as they have helped me guide my goal. I will share with those around me how my progress is going. I will measure how my progress is going by how well I am sleeping, how I am feeling energy wise, how much easier it is to do physical activities and how much fun I am having while socializing and cooking. I am looking forward to the new year and my new goal.

Please respond to one of these silk screens and or other artwork by Stuart Pagaduan. If you need guidance send me a chat through Teams. Remember previous journals where you have responded to artwork. How can your previous learning guide you in this response?
I would love to see/hear journals that are not pencil and paper or typed. Can you think of another way to share your response? I will post my exemplar (teacher example of my journal response) soon.
Here is the logo that “...features artwork by local artist and district employee Stuart Pagaduan. The logo features the warm colours of the rising sun which represent the new day, and a time to give thanks for all we have. Inside the sun or the spaal’ (raven) and wuxus (frog) which both represent transformation. Our collective journey is represented in the canoe and four paddlers. The canoe is a central part of Coast Salish culture and here it denotes our community coming together on the same journey.” (The Highlighter for the November 3, 2020 Open Board Meeting).
Below is an example of Stuart Pagaduan’s creation The Blessing Tree-Xpey’ (Cedar Tree) found in the main hallway of the Cowichan District Hospital.

Please refer to my example of answering questions, in paragraph form, for a journal response. It is below the salmon poster and choices from last week. My example is there to help you.
Salmon
Choice #1 Write a response to the poster. Why is Mrs. Ward showing you this poster? What is happening now in our community that should be guiding us at this time of year? Why is salmon so vital to our community? Have you ever persevered like salmon to get through something? What was it and how did you get through...remembering the teachings of me, family and community.
Choice #2 Write a fiction story (characters, setting, problem, events, solution) told from the perspective of a salmon. We have the story A Salmon’s Sky View in class. The story may or may not go through all of the stages of a salmon life cycle...that is up to you.
Tap the cover of the text to hear the story being read to a primary class.
